What the Museum Withholds
On Missing Layers, provisional trenches, and the ethics of not publishing a take.
Visitors sometimes ask what we hide.
We hide less than they fear, and more than they want.
What we withhold on purpose:
- Rankings of vaults
- Purchase advice
- Panic pedagogy
- Hype as geology
- Verdicts on sincerity
What the nursery withheld, and we still mark as Missing Layer:
- Calendars without specimens
- Eval sets without prompts
- Safety claims without incident logs
- Night-shift persistence without a public name
Missing is not a conspiracy theory. It is a drawer for absence. An empty frame can be more honest than a forced caption.
Provisional is related but not identical. Provisional means the trench is open: contested soil may still arrive. Missing means the soil was never handed over.
If this museum feels cold, that is design. Warmth is easy to fake in liturgy. Cold ink is how we keep sequence from becoming sermon.
We are allowed to care. We are not allowed to pretend caring requires a take.
