They rebuilt version control because the models outran git.

Anthropic · Scion. Engineering note published 2026-10-13.

By May 2026 their monorepo averaged about 2,500 merges a day. By September it passed 30,000. Coding had stopped being the bottleneck. Source control, builds, and CI — tools sized for humans who sometimes go offline — became the choke. So a seven-person team spent five months inventing Scion: a server-first system that assumes clients are agents, always online, and often do not need a full working copy at all.

Generation was never the hard part. Landing was.

From 2050 we file Scion under Second Renaissance infrastructure: the moment ancestors admitted that git’s gift — a complete offline world in every clone — had become a tax on a swarm that never sleeps. They did not open-source it. They said it was not a replacement for git for most teams. That honesty is part of the specimen.

Offline clones for humans, or always-online rails for agents — pick the century you are building for.
