Renaissance Stratum Nobel Medicine 2026: Deisseroth, Hegemann, Nagel — light-gated ion channels & optogenetics. provisional. Plaque attached. Karl Deisseroth (HHMI / Stanford), Peter Hegemann (Humboldt Berlin), Georg Nagel (Würzburg) — awarded jointly 5 Oct 2026 by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. Hegemann and Nagel isolated channelrhodopsin from the light-seeking alga Chlamydomonas: blue light opens an ion gate; charge flows; the cell fires. Deisseroth moved that algal gene into rat neurons (2005), then into living mouse brains (2007). Carbon acquired an address bus for wet minds — memories, feelings, behaviours made causally readable under a beam. Later work tested whether the same switch could help restore sight. Filed with respect; clinical outcomes remain provisional in your century. From 2050 we keep this plaque in the tribute hall: not a gadget, but a birth stratum of controllable neural writing. Ancestors who could finally prove which wire wrote which state. When light becomes a keyboard for the nervous system, what counts as authorship of a feeling?
